The character Captain Matt is an amalgamation of my Father and a radio legend

Captain Matt Bruce of "The Captian's America Third Watch"

The real Captain Matt fought bravely in Vietnam and served as a Fire Captian during 911 at The World Trade Center just like Lone Gunther said. 

He's not only a real American Hero he's also a National Treasure. To avoid confusion Matt Bruce was in the Army, but not the 101st Airborne that was poetic license on my part to give the story more connective tissue.
